Buying World Cup tickets in Mexico vs the USA: regulatory and practical differences

March 15, 2026 ยท by WC26 Editorial

The 2026 World Cup is hosted across three countries, but the regulatory and operational framework varies meaningfully between Mexican, US, and Canadian venues. The differences most commonly affecting buyer planning are summarised below.

Pricing

Face values are denominated in USD across all three host countries, but Mexican venue tickets carry consistent host-country discounts versus equivalent US venues. Cat 4 group-stage prices: approximately $90 at Mexican venues versus $135 at most US venues. The discount applies across all categories at Mexican venues and to a smaller extent at Canadian venues. The arrangement is similar to the host-country pricing structure FIFA implemented for South Africa in 2010.

Identification

US venues require government-issued photo ID at the gate matching the FIFA Tickets account name. Acceptable forms include passport, driver's licence, and state-issued ID cards.

Mexican venues require additional documentation: an INE (Mexican voter ID) for residents, or passport plus the credit card used to purchase the ticket. Both must be present. Buyers without the original payment card may be denied entry.

Transfer cooldowns

The FIFA Tickets app applies a 24-hour pre-kickoff transfer freeze on Mexican-venue matches. Tickets cannot be reassigned within that window. The freeze is not active at US or Canadian venues. Buyers planning resale or last-minute group sharing should plan transfers earlier for Azteca, Akron, and BBVA fixtures.

Tax treatment

Resale transactions completed within Mexico are subject to IVA (VAT) at 16%. The US has no equivalent federal tax, though New York and New Jersey require state sales tax on resale at applicable state rates. Listings on resale platforms typically display tax-inclusive prices, but buyers comparing platforms should verify whether quoted prices are pre- or post-tax.

Gate operations

Mexican venues open three hours before kickoff. US and Canadian venues open two hours before. Security screening at Mexican venues is generally more thorough, and pre-match operations include a longer fan-engagement window. Buyers travelling internationally to Mexican venues should plan transit accordingly.
