Vancouver vs Toronto: a host-city comparison for travel planning

April 12, 2026 · by WC26 Editorial

Canada hosts the 2026 World Cup at two venues: BC Place in Vancouver (seven matches) and BMO Field in Toronto (six matches). For buyers planning a Canadian tournament base and visiting only one of the two cities, the choice depends on fixture preferences, budget, and travel plans for matches at other host cities.

Fixtures

BC Place hosts seven matches across the group stage and Round of 32, including Australia vs Türkiye, multiple Group F fixtures, and one knockout match. BMO Field hosts six matches including Canada's group-stage fixtures (vs Bosnia and Herzegovina) and a potential Canada R32 match. Buyers prioritising host-nation matches must base in Toronto.

Stadium characteristics

BC Place is an enclosed, retractable-roof multipurpose venue with a 50,000+ capacity in football configuration. The dome produces strong acoustic enclosure and weather independence.

BMO Field is a soccer-specific stadium with a 27,000-seat tournament capacity. The smaller venue produces a more intimate atmosphere but materially fewer available tickets per match.

Accommodation

Hotels in Toronto during the tournament window are priced at approximately CA$400–$700 per night. Vancouver pricing runs CA$500–$900 per night. Short-term rental availability in Vancouver has become severely constrained from May 2026 onward. Both cities have introduced anti-price-gouging legislation with limited enforcement.

Transit and venue access

BC Place is located in central Vancouver and accessible by SkyTrain from Vancouver International Airport in approximately 25 minutes. BMO Field is on Toronto's waterfront, accessible from Pearson Airport via the UP Express in approximately 35 minutes plus local transit.

Proximity to other host cities

Vancouver is approximately 3 hours by road from Seattle (Lumen Field, six matches). The Peace Arch and Pacific Highway crossings have historically experienced multi-hour delays during major regional events.

Toronto offers easier access to the eastern seaboard host cities. Direct flights or short connections reach Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey. Buyers planning multi-match trips across multiple US east-coast venues will find Toronto materially more practical.

Visa and entry

Canada is visa-free or eTA-eligible for citizens of most qualifying nations. US citizens require no specific tournament visa. Border crossings are expected to face elevated wait times during high-fixture days at both Pacific Highway (Vancouver) and Ambassador Bridge (Toronto).

Recommendation summary

Vancouver suits buyers prioritising stadium atmosphere and Pacific Coast tournament travel. Toronto suits buyers prioritising Canadian national-team matches and east-coast multi-venue trips.
